DLX DESIGN ACADEMY is a design innovation education program that is part of the "Design-Led X (DLX)" initiative promoted by the Institute of Industrial Science at The University of Tokyo.
Our Mission
The educational policy of DLX DESIGN ACADEMY is based on the research and development results of design-led innovation promoted by the DLX Design Laboratory. We are committed to educational effectiveness by taking our activities off campus and offering our programs to the broader community, including industry, and from DLX's extensive pool of talent to the world's leading design and technology researchers and practitioners, we provide hands-on education to all those who need to learn for a better future.
The effectiveness of design thinking as a methodology for innovation is attracting attention. And innovation requires the development of people with T-shaped expertise, and DLX DESIGN ACADEMY's activities are not exclusively for designers. Many of the programs we offer are intended for people and organizations in many fields that pursue new value creation, including various positions in companies, as well as government administration and education. While we provide forward-looking learning for professionals working in the design field, we also systematically develop and provide design education methods for those who have not received specialized education in design.
Our perspective is always global. In collaboration with the Royal College of Art (UK), Bezalel Academy (Israel), and others, we curate complex trends from a global perspective and offer programs on a variety of noteworthy techniques and methodologies.
At the core of all our actions is our adventurous attitude. We don't rely solely on what we already know, and we're willing to take risks and try new educational approaches, sometimes in a radical way.
Our background
Design-Led X is an initiative of the Institute of Industrial Science at The University of Tokyo to create new value by incorporating a design perspective into research activities, and was launched in collaboration with the Royal College of Art in the UK. The DLX DESIGN ACADEMY was born out of this mission. We still cooperate with the Royal College of Art on a programmatic basis.
The Institute of Industrial Science at The University of Tokyo is one of the largest university-affiliated research institutes in Japan. It is home to more than 1,000 researchers from Japan and abroad who conduct cutting-edge research in almost all areas of engineering, from basic to applied.
