Inspire Talks is an exciting opportunity to enjoy hearing about cutting edge topics from science and design. This 25th edition of Inspire Talks welcomes three speakers on the theme of projects that envision a "possible future" beyond technological development.

Professor Toru Tatema from Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo, will be speaking on the theme of his research into nano-sized metallic particle materials. The phenomena with metallic nanomaterials that Professor Tatema is working on have the potential to create a wide range of functions. Some may be surprised to hear that the transparent cloak that appears in Ghost in the Shell is actually a figment of the imagination based on this technology.

Meanwhile, from the DLX Design Lab, Naoto Takayama, project lead of the Meta Material project, which is being undertaken in collaboration with the Tatema Laboratory, will be speaking at the event. In this project, Takayama is tackling the issue of how to visualise cutting-edge basic research that is difficult to visualise. He will introduce the possibilities of collaboration between basic research and design, together with specific research and design project results.

Up-and-coming science fiction writer Itsuki Tsukui will also appear as a special guest for this talk. Tsukui, who has been remarkably active, winning the Grand Prize at the 5th Hayakawa Science Fiction Contest and being selected as one of the Forbes 30 Under 30 (Japanese edition), will delve into the "possible future" from the perspective of a science fiction writer, cutting through future science and technology and the human condition from her unique perspective.

Please join us for an inspiring exchange of views with a scientist, a designer and a science fiction writer. In the final part of the session, we will also take questions from the audience and look at the challenges and attractions of both development and design projects.
