Review: CIRCULAR ECONOMY – Implementing Design & Innovation Strategies

Updated: Sep 30, 2022

This programme was held on May 11th, 2022 with Clare Brass and Tom Leech from Department 22, a London-based design firm specialized in the circular economy. The session focused on strategies based on design methodologies, and we discussed and examined how existing products and services can be transformed into circular products and services on a case-by-case basis. I am currently working as an ethnographer and design researcher, using design methodology and qualitative research to address social and future issues.

I participated in the program hoping to have an opportunity to learn from advanced practitioners from overseas as we consider how we as a company can fulfill our responsibility toward the realization of a circular economy oriented society.

In the workshop, we worked on making currently linear product/service cases circular by using six frameworks. I had been focusing only on initiatives related to disposal, but by incorporating the "embedded intelligence" and "modularity" frameworks provided, I was able to come up with new circular design business ideas.

Throughout the entire program, participants learned a wide range of knowledge, from basic knowledge of circular design to methodologies used in business, case studies, and how to facilitate an online workshop, and gained a new perspective on the circular society.

The program helped me develop a way of thinking and a driving force to tackle with those questions with no answer, when companies are supposed to proactively work toward the future in response to social trends such as the circular economy.

This is my second time in DLX Design Academy, and I find it attractive that I can reach fresh information provided by overseas lecturers, and that the information is incorporated into methods that I can immediately apply for my own work. I would like to participate again when there is any topic interesting for me.
